Founded in October 2008, Sister Scholars™ is an organization for women of African descent who are pursuing or have completed their doctorates in various fields. We provide peer support and resources for the successful completion of the doctorate degree as well as placement in academic and other environments. We also seek to individually and collectively mentor other women who will one day seek to earn a doctorate.
We offer virtual and physical spaces for women of African descent to build successful careers inside and outside of the academy. This happens through various activities including virtual writing groups, sharing resources for jobs and conferences, and periodic retreats.
AnneMarie Mingo, Ph.D. founded Sister Scholars in 2008 while a graduate student at Emory University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Ethics, Culture, and Moral Leadership at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
Since 2013, we have offered virtual writing groups each semester to create accountability and support for our scholarship.
We have also offered face-to-face and virtual monthly writing clusters in cities throughout the U.S.
Through individual and group coaching we have helped women achieve success on their own terms.
Sister Scholars™ share announcements regarding jobs, conferences, and Calls for Papers within our private Facebook community.
We believe in peer-mentoring and supporting women of African descent who are currently in doctoral programs and those with doctorates who are succeeding in various fields (inside and outside of the academy).
We also donate books to women in various transitional shelters and mentor young women who have an interest in becoming scholars.
